The Basics

What does it include?

You will develop the skills and knowledge required to provide first aid, including CPR, to a casualty in line with best practice as per the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) and ANZCOR guidelines.

This course will enable you to provide potentially lifesaving first aid in a range of situations, including community and workplace settings.

Who is eligible?

Anyone interested in learning cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) who is fit and able to carry out 2 minutes of uninterrupted chest compressions, rescue breaths, and be assessed in person. Please note this course is offered in the English language only.

We are conveniently located at the Xanadu Group building, 4 Gwenyfred Road, South Perth WA, 6151. There is ample parking available on premises.

If you are traveling by public transport, the 910 bus route goes right past our location with stops after Way St and Berwick St.

There are no formal prerequisites required for you to enrol in this course, however, a sound understanding of the English language is essential. For this reason, students will be required to complete a short assessment to ascertain their language, literacy, and numeracy level at the time of enrolment.

Additionally, upon enrolment, students must have a valid Unique Student Identifier (USI) to study an accredited course in Australia.

You don't need to be athletic but to complete the course, you will be required to perform 2 mins of uninterrupted single CPR (5 cycles of chest compressions and rescue breaths) and you will be asked to handle the dummy manually. So, a level of physical fitness is essential.

In-person

Face-to-Face time for HLTAID011 Provide First Aid & CPR is 7.5hrs - with a ½ hour break for lunch.

Online

The online quiz component is structured to take approx. 2 hours to complete in your own time. The submission deadline for completing the online quiz component for HLTAID011 Provide First Aid and CPR is 1 month from enrolment, but it is better to complete it prior to attending the in-person training, so that you already have a basic understanding of the course materials.

YES, completing the online quiz is a COMPULSORY component of HLTAID011 Provide First Aid course to obtain one's Statement of Attainment.

The completion of HLTAID011 Provide First Aid and CPR will enable you to deliver first aid and perform CPR in community and workplace settings.

For training specific to vulnerable people such as infants, school-age children, and older adults in aged-care settings, the course you will need is HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in Education and Care Settings which is coming soon to AITS. After your pre-course self-paced study and the multiple-choice online quiz, you will also be assessed in-person on your incident reporting skills. Finally, you will be asked to give assessors a practical demonstration of your CPR skills in various scenarios and need to demonstrate 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR performance.

If you have completed this first aid training before, please provide us with your Statement of Attainment or other verifiable certificates upon your enrolment. Depending on your renewal date, you may only be due to refresh your HLTAID009 Provide CPR only.

HLTAID011 Provide First Aid and CPR must be renewed once every 3 years to maintain first aid compliance and provide first aid in an emergency.

The Model Workplace Health and Safety Code of Practice requires a minimum number of employees at a workplace complete HLTAID009 Provide CPR only only annually (every 12 months) and HLTAID011 Provide First Aid and CPR be renewed every three (3) years.

The minimum requirements pf first aid responders in the workplace are:

  • Low-risk workplaces — one first aider for every 50 workers First aid in the workplace Page 17 of 35 Code of Practice
  • High-risk workplaces — one first aider for every 25 workers
  • Remote high-risk workplaces — one first aider for every 10 workers.

The Safe Work Australia Model Code of Practice: First Aid in the Workplace requires employers to ensure that their nominated first aiders attend training regularly to ensure currency.

Yes, if you work in the community or health sectors, mining, construction, and many other industries, the HLTAID011 Provide First Aid and CPR course will be the right course to qualify as a first aid responder in your workplace.

If you work in aged care, childcare or other education settings, you may be required to complete HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in Education and Care settings coming soon to AITS.
